Should I use a broker to sell my business?

Modified on: May 21st, 2018

Absolutely. You may think you can save money by not hiring a broker, but you’d be mistaken. First, selling a business is a very complex undertaking - much more difficult than selling real estate. That's because there are a huge number of issues that need to be negotiated. A lawyer can help with the negotiations but not every lawyer is qualified to negotiate a business sale. And many lawyers end up killing deals by being overcautious.

A high proportion (over half) of small businesses never sell. You are more likely to sell and get a higher price if you use a broker who can market your business properly.
